JUST IN-Ipokia Chairman Hon. Avoseh Advocates Stronger Cross-Border Ties at Nigeria–Benin Security Summit

The Executive Chairman of Ipokia Local Government, Hon. Johnson Akohomeh Avoseh, participated in a Joint Security Meeting between representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Benin held at the Idiroko–Igolo, Conference Room, Border Area.

The meeting brought together security agencies from both countries, the Mayor of Ifonyin Municipality, and other key stakeholders to deliberate on strengthening cross-border cooperation in addressing emerging security challenges affecting communities along the Nigeria–Benin border corridor.
Participants expressed concern over the growing incidence of transnational crimes, including smuggling, kidnapping, drug trafficking, human trafficking, illegal migration, and other criminal activities. Discussions centred on the need for enhanced intelligence gathering, effective information sharing, community vigilance, and stronger collaboration among security agencies to improve security across the border region.
The Chairman reaffirmed the commitment of Ipokia Local Government to initiatives that promote peace, security, and stability within border communities. He emphasized the importance of proactive security measures and active community involvement in identifying and reporting suspicious activities.
At the end of the meeting, participants agreed to adopt more coordinated approaches to tackling criminal activities through regular joint security operations, intensified public sensitisation campaigns, strengthened actions against drug trafficking and abuse, improved information sharing among security agencies, and broader stakeholder participation in future engagements.
A major resolution reached was the commencement of the registration and identification of commercial motorcyclists within Ipokia Local Government as part of efforts to enhance security monitoring and curb criminal activities. The exercise will be coordinated by the Local Government Administration.

The meeting also highlighted the need to strengthen youth empowerment programmes as a strategic means of reducing unemployment, discouraging criminal activities, and addressing the growing challenge of drug abuse among young people.
Furthermore, participants resolved to involve traditional rulers, religious leaders, transport unions, Community Development Associations (CDAs), youth groups, Amotekun Corps, Forest Guards, and other relevant stakeholders in future security meetings and sensitisation programmes to ensure a more inclusive and community-driven security framework.

The Chairman reiterated that security remains a collective responsibility and called on residents of Ipokia Local Government to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information that will assist in preventing and combating crime.

He also commended the security agencies of both Nigeria and the Republic of Benin for their dedication to fostering peaceful coexistence and strengthening security cooperation across the international border.
