Heavy Hearts in Yewaland: First-Class Monarch, Onipokia of Ipokia, Passes Away at 55

The ancient kingdom of Ipokia in Ogun State has been plunged into mourning following the sudden transition of its highly revered traditional ruler. HRM Oba Yisa ‘Sola Adeniyi Olaniyan (JP), the 46th Onipokia of Ipokia Kingdom, has joined his ancestors.
The first-class monarch passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital in downtown Houston, Texas, at the age of 55.
According to sources, Oba Olaniyan had been in the United States for several months receiving medical attention. He passed away following a successful surgical procedure aimed at correcting a lingering difficulty with swallowing. While exact clinical details surrounding his final moments remain private, his sudden transition has sent shockwaves across Yewaland and the entire traditional institution of Ogun State.
From Entertainment Mogul to the Sacred Throne
Before answering the call of his ancestors to ascend the throne of his forefathers, Oba Olaniyan was widely known as a vibrant entrepreneur, cultural ambassador, and entertainment powerhouse.
Born on September 5, 1970, to the late Prince Hamzat Akanbi Olaniyan of the Iwaye Dodo Ruling House, he spent a significant portion of his adult life working and thriving in the United States. He was the visionary founder of the Afro-Heritage Broadcasting and Entertainment Awards (AHBE Awards)—a prominent platform dedicated to celebrating African and Nigerian culture, movies, and music in the diaspora.
Even as a monarch, his deep love for the creative arts never waned. His final public appearance on social media in April 2026 captured him attending a warm reception in Houston held in honor of Nollywood actress Dr. Biola Adebayo, where he praised her contributions to community service and the entertainment sector.

A Historic Reign Cut Short
Oba Olaniyan’s journey to the throne was a testament to patience and resilience. Out of eight princes who vied for the exalted stool, he was unanimously chosen by the kingmakers. However, a combination of the global COVID-19 pandemic and political transitions delayed his official coronation. The Oba famously spent 15 months in traditional seclusion before his formal presentation.

Key Milestones of His Reign
August 12, 2020: Officially presented the staff of office by Governor Dapo Abiodun, making him the very first monarch installed under that administration.
September 5, 2020: Crowned the 46th Onipokia on his landmark 50th birthday.
September 2025: Celebrated his 5th coronation anniversary alongside his 55th birthday in a grand event that brought top political leaders, captains of industry, and royal fathers to Ipokia.
As the second-highest-ranking monarch in the Yewa Traditional Council (second only to the Olu of Ilaro, the Paramount Ruler of Yewaland), the Onipokia held a historic first-class throne ranked alongside iconic stools like the Alake of Egbaland and the Awujale of Ijebuland.
A Great Void Left Behind
Oba Olaniyan's transition leaves behind a massive void not just in his immediate kingdom, but within the entire Nigerian cultural and traditional landscape. He successfully bridged the gap between ancient heritage and modern global media, using his platform to consistently uplift his people.
The late monarch is survived by his beloved queen, Olori Folasade, his children, and the entire people of Ipokia Kingdom.
As burial arrangements and traditional rites are set to be announced by the palace in due course, the thoughts and prayers of the nation rest with the Royal Family and the people of Yewaland.
