BOAT OPERATORS IN IPOKIA LOCAL GOVERNMENT CHARGED TO PRIORITISE SECURITY AND SAFETY ON WATERWAYS

The Executive Chairman of Ipokia Local Government, Hon. Johnson Akohomeh Avoseh, has charged boat operators within the Local Government to be highly security conscious and remain extremely vigilant while discharging their duties, especially in view of the prevailing security challenges across the country.
The Chairman gave the charge during a meeting held with boat operators and representatives of riverine communities in Ipokia Local Government.

He emphasised the critical importance of safety on the waterways, particularly the dangers associated with overloading of boats. He stressed the mandatory use of life jackets by both operators and passengers, noting that the Local Government is currently working out modalities to provide additional safety jackets for users of the waterways.
The Chairman further disclosed that arrangements are underway to improve safety infrastructure across the jetties. These include grading of access roads leading to the various river jetties and the provision of solar-powered lights at the jetties to enhance visibility and deter criminal activities during early morning and evening operations.

In addition to safety measures, the Chairman placed strong emphasis on security protocols. He urged boat operators to be extra cautious about the people they carry, ensuring they are reasonably sure of passengers identities and intentions before boarding. Operators were advised to remain alert for any suspicious behaviour or unfamiliar individuals, avoid operating in isolation where possible, and promptly report any security concerns or threats to the relevant authorities or the Local Government. This vigilance is essential to prevent the waterways from being exploited by criminal elements amid the current national security situation.
He also urged the operators to make proper use of the life jackets already distributed by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. While admonishing operators to desist from the habit of overloading their boats, the Chairman reiterated the need for them to always prioritise the safety and security of lives and goods.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to re-emphasise the importance of maintaining a cordial and continuous working relationship with the Local Government, particularly in the area of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). The boat operators unanimously agreed to this collaboration.

In attendance were representatives from the riverine communities of Izigi, Tongegi, Akere, Agada, Odo Ibatefin, Vawhe Pevi, Odo Aseko, Odo Nla Ijofin, Whekan, and others, alongside the boat operators, as well as their respective chairmen and secretaries.

The operators pledged to remain security conscious at all times, ensure strict compliance with all safety and security measures, be diligent in verifying the people they carry, and cooperate fully with the Local Government in all areas of concern.
